Missing The Forest For The Trees

The Oregonian wrote a story on how similar Mohamed Mohamud and Antonio Martinez are. Except they missed just how similar they really are, other than they both aren't too bright and fell for an obvious trap.

The FBI started keeping an eye on a Baltimore construction worker because of his Facebook postings, including a declaration that he hates "Any 1 who opposes Allah."
The Washington Post has more details on how the FBI monitored Antonio Martinez, 21, a U.S. citizen who recently converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Hussain. He was charged Wednesday with plotting to blow up a military recruiting station in Maryland.

Hussain drew a map and picked out a place to park the vehicle he thought was loaded with explosives, just as 19-year-old Mohamed Mohamud allegedly did in an attempt to detonate a bomb near a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland.

The Washington Post added that Wednesday's arrest was the latest in a series of cases in which federal authorities have used undercover operatives to secretly befriend those suspected of plotting terror attacks and, in some cases, even to provide the means to carry them out.
According to the Los Angeles Times, after the FBI sting inPortland hit the headlines, Martinez worried he too was being set up. "I'm not falling for no b.s," the FBI said Martinez told thefederal agent.

Janet Napolitano secretary of homeland security, said that such FBI stings are necessary, "particularly in this kind of a terrorist environment"

"There are rules that govern them and they are done very carefully, and the FBI abides bythose rules, law enforcement abides by those rules, but they are an important tool to have."

She added that there is "an increasing amount of hometown or homegrown terrorist activityparticularly by individuals who have become radicalized and associated with Al Qaeda or Islamist terrorism beliefs and techniques and tactics.

The Oregonian failed to mention the most important similarities, both are Muslims and both are third world immigrants. Both grew up in liberal towns surrounded by hate America propaganda. Both are failures of America's immigration system. Until that lesson is learned, they will not be the last.
